The new business owner is trying to increase member’s intrinsic motivation to join in on a healthier lifestyle and increase their exercise. We must first have an understanding of what intrinsic motivation means. Intrinsic motivation means, when an individual is excited about partaking in an activity that interest them for a personal satisfaction and not due to outside circumstances. This new business owner is trying to increase the member’s intrinsic motivation by offering prizes and incentives to members who attend at least three times a week and exercises for at least an hour during that time. Upon reviewing over our articles for the week, the article on intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, not everyone is intrinsically motivated by the same task. The new business owner should have used more that just one technique in order to try to motivate her member. If the member is not appealed by these rewards and incentives, then it will not motivate them to join the health club. The new business owner may be on the right track while trying to gain members but she has to do more than just capture their intrinsic motivation because that will not last. In order to persuade she will need step out of her box and try to make herself more available and closer to these individuals. Developing friendships with them will help persuade them to join. Once she becomes close with a lot of the individuals in the community then she can start to build them up. She could compliment them and make them feel good about themselves and this would help them be more apt to do as she is wishing. Persuasion can be used in the form of a statement or a question. Depending on if you’re giving a demand or asking them to do complete an action could have an effect on the persuasion of completing the task before them. Once these individuals start getting involved then she should set goals for them and make them publicly announce their goals so they will be more willing to stick to them. She should share her vast knowledge with the individuals in the community to make them more aware of how intelligent she is when it comes to living a healthier lifestyle. The role of cognitive dissonance and self perception in developing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can be contributing factors to engaging in this lifestyle. Cognitive dissonance is feeling guilty about a decision we chose to make but then going back and justifying why we chose to do what it was we did. A person may want to engage in healthy activities but at the same time may want to be lazy and watch their favorite shows that come on during the only time of the day they could work out. This person could justify skipping the gym because this is the only time his/her favorite show comes on during the day and if he/she goes then they will miss the show. This person has seen what positive effects living a healthy lifestyle has had on their friends and may want the same outcomes for themselves so they may chose based off of seeing the positive sides to working out as outweighing watching their favorite t.v. shoes everyday. By seeing how happy working out and eating healthy makes their friends feel then they may want to jump in and decide to participate as well.
